What is an Interior Designer?

What is an Interior Designer?

Interior designers are skilled professionals who combine creativity, technical expertise, and business acumen to create functional, safe, and high-quality interior environments.

What is an Interior Designer?

The profession of Interior Design is relatively new, constantly evolving, and often confusing to the public. Interior design is more than just aesthetics. Professional Interior designers are creative, imaginative and artistic but also need to be disciplined, organized and skilled business people.

Interior Design is about finding creative design solutions for interior environments while supporting the health, safety and well being of occupants and enhancing their quality of life.

Interior Design is a multi-faceted profession that brings together technical expertise and a comprehensive understanding of design to enhance the function and quality of interior spaces. In addition to studying design fundamentals, professional interior designers receive training on building technology, ergonomics, environmental issues, and local building and fire codes.

Qualified through a rigorous process of education, experience and examination, registered members of the IDA have the skills necessary to oversee the complex tasks of designing and managing the construction of interior environments.

Whether designing a private residence, commercial office, retail environment, recreation facility, or public institution, interior designers coordinate with other trades, suppliers, and licensed practitioners to ensure the safe, successful completion of a project. In addition, all IDA members are required to:

  • Carry liability insurance
  • Participate in ongoing professional development
  • Uphold a professional code of ethics and standards of practice
